No Place Like Home: A Ranking of the Best (Big) Cities in the World

Everyone loves a list as long as it’s not things that have to be done. If it’s a list of rankings, folks like to see if and where they place. Today we have the 18th annual Mercer Quality of Life list of global cities as reported by the UK Dailymail.

I’m fascinated by this compilation and a little suspicious of it at the same time. The top ten slots are 70% European. The U.S. lags behind, with San Francisco coming in at no. 28. The methodology behind the rankings was based on the relevant safety of business travel. Local governments will go out of their way to keep money flowing in. Also, many larger cities may have built up a good corporate environment in spite of problems locals have to deal with. Thus, a city may rank higher than one would think based on its quality of life for its everyday residents.

Vienna, Zurich, and Auckland (1, 2 and 3) are fantastic places. However, many of those European cities in the top ten and top 100 have been experiencing major problems in the past few years due to mass invasion (some say migration but that’s not accurate) and related Islamic terrorism.

Paris and Lyon are 37 and 38, respectively. Twice last year Paris suffered serious attacks by ISIS. The French capital is still under a state of emergency. Crime is getting so bad in many cities the police are abandoning their patrols – even the fearsome German Polizi. Not completely cowed by their insane leaders, European men are beginning to resist. Groups like the Sons of Odin are rapidly gaining popularity and are “filling in” for the police when trouble arises. The people of Europe, never a crowd to ultimately tolerate invasion very well, are reaching the breaking point.

Governments are about to change. The EU itself may be dramatically reformed or abolished. Even the popular press is beginning to call things what they are. One of Poland’s largest magazines, wSieci (The Network), just featured a cover story, The Islamic Rape if Europe. The last time ordinary Poles expressed this much solidarity with Germany the subject was Danzig and the results were far from peaceful. Makes you wonder if business travel experts study history.

San Francisco, London, Paris, New York, etc. are fine, world class cities. However, I noticed a lot of contenders with serious problems – like crime. Chicago is just ahead of New York on the list despite being on pace to double  its already sky high murder rate this year. Houston, Miami and Atlanta are grouped together in the 60s. Again, they’re fine places but they have parts one wouldn’t want to walk through and driving in all three can be a nightmare. Businesses in Atlanta are starting to require employees to carry guns.

Detroit, tied with Hong Kong for no. 70, caught my eye. There is still a lot of major business in the motor city but not much else. Where else in America can one purchase a house for $1? If that house collapses in a newly grown forest and no one is around to sell drugs, is it still a ghetto?

The list gets downright laughable. Tripoli, Damascus, Khartoum, and Baghdad and others listed are active war zones. Granted these are at the bottom of the list but, still, numerous decent places go unmentioned. It makes you wonder if business travel experts read the news.

Yesterday Senior Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia died at a resort in Texas. So passes the last originalist champion of the old Constitution.

Scalia was recognized, even by his detractors, as perhaps the most intelligent, well reasoned man ever on the Court. Frequently his words, majority or minority, were the only ones worth reading in opinions. His dissenting opinion, often all alone, was legendary.

Political speculation abounds regarding his potential replacement. Obama or the next President will fill the now open seat. However, this man’s legacy and position are irreplaceable.

Thank you and God rest you, Justice Scalia.

 

Deja Vu

The other day I reported things are looking like 2008 all over again, economically speaking. I must have had it all wrong. The Dow came back over 300 points based on rumors of limited oil production and a statement from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

New York Fed President William Dudley said things are just dandy. He said the financial industry is “clearly stronger” than it was ahead of the last financial crisis. Cleary. Cleary the banks were not very strong then as their condition precipitated the crisis. What are words anyway? Nothing more than descriptive terms.

This rosey description rang a bell in my memory. I recall hearing something similar before.

Ah, yes. Just prior to the 2008 crisis the Fed Chairman, Ben Bernanke said the financial sector was just dandy – as strong as ever. He kept repeating that lie … um, line right up until the meltdown was undeniable. As late as May 15, 2008 Bernanke said:

I strongly urge financial institutions to remain proactive in their capital-raising efforts. Doing so not only helps the broader economy but positions firms to take advantage of new profit opportunities as conditions in the financial markets and the economy improve. (Emphasis mine).

That was just after Bear Stearns sold at a fire sale price and just before Lehman Brothers went under. Then came TARP, Bush’s betrayal of real capitalism, and tens of Trillion$ in Fed funny money for banks in the U.S. and Europe. You may recall the housing crash and high unemployment. Fun stuff. Never stronger.

The lesson learned is if the Fed says the economy is well, then the bottom is about to fall out. It’s deja vu all over again.

No Debate

I haven’t wasted any of my time watching the Presidential debates this year. After each one, usually the next day, I catch snipetts of the various lies told. It all seems scripted, routine and disingenuous to me. They all talk about themselves, each other, more wars we won’t win, and how the government can help us.

One thing no politician since Ron Paul has mentioned is the dreadful state of the economy and how the government helped it get that way.

A few months ago, against conventional wisdom, I said we were moving into a recession. Now people are starting to agree with me. Analysts, pundits, economists, bankers, even Janet Yellen are now muttering the “R” word. Week by week the chatter intensifies. Week by week the measure of everything, except gold, falls. I’m sure at least one rodent candidate must have said something but none of them can say anything substantial.

They can’t and they won’t because they do not understand what is happening and because they are part of the problem (they and their corporate masters).

All economies move in cycles, expansions and contractions. In a free market, absent central banking and government interference, corrections (recessions and depressions) fix themselves in rapid fashion. Only central planning can slow or intensify bad times. In the early 1920s America experienced a severe depression; it lasted a year, yielding to “roaring” good times. Another depression struck in 1929. This time, aided by the unholy alliance of the Federal Reserve and the Federal government, the bad times lasted about 15 years.

Back then there was an economy to recover. Today America is a hollow shell of debt, entitlements, and gambling. The Alliance played its perhaps final, ultimate hand in masking the 2008 financial crisis and recession. Nothing was actually fixed. In fact things are worse now than they were then. Day by day the unraveling becomes more tangible. We’re about to enter uncharted territory that the experts say could destroy the economy (the same experts that helped get us here). A recession may be the best, mildest outcome. What comes after recession? Depression? Total collapse? A dark age?

Still the lying election rats say nothing. In there defense there isn’t much to say. Or do. It would be best to allow whatever scenario is coming just play out. Then we could rebuild. However, something tells me the charletons will try to make things just a little worse if they can.

Super Bowl L (that’s Latin for “50”, TV crowd) is in books (those paper things…). A few quick thoughts on the game: the play itself was better than expected; the old school NFL beat the new through sheer tenacity. Lady Gaga shivered my spine with her rendition of the Old Republic’s anthem. I successfully ignored the associated jingoism. The halftime show wasn’t bad either, not great but good enough. The commercials were just pathetic, a mindless collection of preachy, lowbrow modernism lost amid the various competing messages of correctness and stupid consumerism.

The solution for football is simply football. Play the game and leave off the societal suedo-science garbage. The new school will be rewarded if it emulates the old – less pomp, more heart. With that said we can now look forward, sporting wise, to Masters week!

We can also turn our attention to more weighty matters. I don’t mean the clown show election, that is as meaningless as any Super Bowl commercial. There are real issues which warrant real action. Two critical matters come to mind this morning, both representing dire problems for the West. The first is the dire condition of the economy, the second the clash of Christian Civilization with the post-modern forces of Hell.

Ignorance may be bliss but it is also the overarching theme of economic theory; most just don’t get it. Gary North is an Austrian School genius. His recent piece is both a concise history and a diagnosis of what’s wrong. Analogized to football, classical economics and free trade and association are like the teams playing the game. Fascist government regulation and interference is like the pomp and stupidity surrounding the game and weakening it.

North notes that the modern system is dead and only waiting for burial. The debt and crippling regulations of the state have pushed the system to the point of collapse. The inevitable end – default, totally – is the solution to its own problem. Let it happen. Let us be free of the pretense and trappings of socialism in our rebuilding.

Civilization may be equated to football also. The West is the game itself, the worthy happening. The forces of the debased, multi-cultural, death-loving heathens are the commercial distraction; they’re threatening to destroy the game by making it not worth watching.

While the TV told us to drive trendy cars and save water, while the government protects murderers and, simultaneously, persecutes ranchers, ISIS plans war against the Christian church in America. Literally, they want to gun down Christians at airship.

Christians today are under attack on a level not seen since the early days of the Roman Empire.

If a Christian baker refuses to bake a cake for a gay wedding, that is front page news, but if a Muslim admits to planning to shoot up a church of several thousand people that is a non-event according to the media.

This anti-Christian bias is growing stronger with each passing year, and it has now become institutionalized in our society in so many ways.

The American church hasn’t been all that helpful in the fight. Rather than teach the Gospel truth modern Catholic and Protestant denominations are overeager to hawk the false gospel of prosperity. A look around Facebook daily shows the problem. Jesus is concerned with eternal salvation not how many times you “share” or “like” some comforting worldy riches meme. Type AMEN!

The Muslim arrested for plotting terror at a megachurch noted he was doing his duty for jihad and planning to attack a place where people were both unaware and unarmed. Again, the problem presents its own solution. Be aware. Learn what the hell is happening around you. In a war, be prepared to fight. When confronted, resist.

Not one of the Republican nor Democrat clown show freaks will help us. They all work for the enemy. Let us demonstrated old school fortitude in dealing with them and their works.

It’s raining this afternoon; it’s a little humid and there’s not much of a breeze. A foul odor has settled in the lower airs. At first I thought about the stink from the old paper mill which I have not smelled in a while. Then I remembered that they adopted the process of scrubbing the fumes as to eliminate malodorous contamination.

“Whence came this stentch?” I asked myself. Then I remembered the quadrennial election this year. Ahhh. On wings of the media the sour notes of political abscess drift in from Iowa and New Hampshire. I would much rather smell the paper pulp cookoff.

The only halfway decent candidate dropped out today. Though a mere shadow of his father Rand Paul would make such a better President than any of the other trash as to make a comparison pointless. This is my academic observation only. The foolishness concerns me, personally, not at all. Those who are concerned, the television and tattoos crowd, simply would not tolerate a man honestly preaching even a modicum of freedom. Dr. Paul may now return to the Senate where he can at least object on the record to the Imperial advance.

I think the establishment has picked Herr Rubio as their man [SIC]. The masses are split as follows: Trump for the big government loving warmongers; Hillary or Bernie for the other big government loving warmongers. For a picture of how any of these saps will play out as Chief Executive just recall the days of the last four Presidents.

James Ostrowski just posted part three in his short series on progressivism and the GOP. I like his description of the GOP in a nutshell – a shell of a party full of nuts. Reminds one of the Democrats. Some still think the Republicans somehow stand for limited government and a little personal liberty. Then again, some (adults) still believe in Santa Claus.

Outside of factional political fiction important things are happening in America – exciting things!

The government’s military, having killed or crippled so many of our young men, now wants to make young women register for the draft. If successful, then modern feminism and communism will have succeeded in repealing the last barriers of social injustice and in destroying the last vestiges of sanity in the smoldering remains of Columbia. Talk about progressive!

I can just imagine my little girl telling me, “Daddy! I get to go fight somewhere you’ve never heard of so bankers and criminals can make more money!” I can just imagine the cold, empty pain I’d feel. I can just imagine driving a fuel truck down to the local recruiting office. God bless America! Land of the free.

One horrible phenomenon drives another drives another in the land of the flea. Jack Perry does a great job attempting to explain why so many teenagers and young people in our great nation are committing suicide these days. What do you call a culture where death is a seemingly better alternative to daily life? A culture of death? Yeah!

Many younglings, having narrowly escaped the abortionist’s knife, emerge into a world of constant violence, war, sadism, oppression, depression, recession, and shallow stupidity. Many can’t cope. Many die. Have you heard even one of the presidential rats mention this once? Of course not. That would take away time from attacking each other and promising lies they never intend to fulfill. The public seems cool with it so I won’t take this any further. Just something to consider if the TV happens to break and thinking be forced by inconvenient necessity on atrophied minds.

If your daughter doesn’t get drafted to make the world safe for moneychangers and if she doesn’t kill herself, then she may find herself in a college class. There she will be instructed in the art of nothingness by some pitiful, hoplophobic moron. Academia used to educate the young on the larger facets of humanity and the universe. Today, in America, they feebly pass on the blittering fears of smaller minds.

A student at a Georgia college was recently forced out of a class by a shrieking idiot instructor because the student was carrying a gun. Professor Wimpy was frightened by the presence of an inanimate object and reacted like a panicked rabbit confronted by a wolf.

Similar cowardly fascists across the country are trying to ban open carry in all places – Starbucks, Kroger, and especially in schools.

It mattered not that the student in Georgia was a police officer and in uniform at the time. What mattered were the teacher’s tiny feelings. The college has since apologized (skirting the matter of the underlying blatant illegality) and welcomed the officer back. If they were honest they would just refund tuitions and close shop. Word has it the instructor has been institutionalized. Home of the brave.

I hope you get more of a chuckle out of all this and less of a shiver. Just because the inmates are running the asylum doesn’t mean we have to go in and join them. That’s really the way it is.

 

Numbers Big and Small

Five clowns captured the political attention of a failing nation last night with their various caucus placements in Iowa. You know the names: Clinton, Sanders, Cruz, Trump, and Rubio. Clinton was said to have celebrated with a midnight email deleting party, Rubio with a foam fiesta.

One of those five will likely become the next President of America.

100 million or so people, either brainwashed, fatally optimistic, or just plain stupid, are really excited about the direction in which “their” candidates may lead the Empire.

Nineteen Trillion. While the masses of hens fantasized about the next fox in chief the national debt quietly surpassed $19,000,000,000,000 – officially. Unofficially its 5 to 10 times higher. By the time Obama leaves office the debt will be well over $20 Trillion. His successor, whoever that might be matters not, will likely see $20T balloon to $40T.

Zero. That’s the number of times this suicidal cycle will most likely play out again. Enjoy this debt election spectacle while you can.

I had forgotten about Gérard Depardieu, star of Les Fugitifs and Cyrano de Bergerac and countless other films. I don’t get out much and macho men not sporting dozens of tattoos are not presently in vogue. Then tonight I ran across this article.

Depardieu is in a Cvstos watch ad holding a rifle and gloating over a dead deer. He credits his watch with the kill.

The ad is (probably) staged. The lines are almost cheesy. I’m not in the market for a $14,000 watch. But damn! I’m impressed. A manly man actor has played a masculine role, sure to knot the panties of the politically correct, and he ain’t apologized! Knowing Depardieu he won’t apologize. Laugh maybe. Throw a punch maybe. Pander to wimps? Never.

This man is a rebel. He told France to shove their 75% income tax and moved to Belgium. Now he’s a Russian citizen and friends with Putin. Think of Putin what you may but he is a tough guy. Eye of the tiger. Doesn’t back down. Doesn’t give a damn what the limp-wristed hand-wringers think … I mean feel. Feel.

In a time when America’s President panders to terrorists and caters to Nazi hacks and hags, I find Depardieu’s masculine watch ad refreshing. Maybe it’s a symbol of larger changes for the better.

Wimps and communist illuminati types have been doing their best to annihilate Europe. Their pet “refugees” are having a field day collecting welfare, raping women, and blowing up theaters. The natives have had it. They’re in the streets fighting back. Deportations are underway. Governments are about to radically change. All refreshing.

I was born, ages ago, in the great state of Mississippi, then part of the Union known as the United States of America. Things were different then and there. It may be forgetfulness or romanticism but, I swear, it was better. Now I truly appreciate what Meatloaf was saying: “It was long ago and it was far away and it was so much better than it is today.”

In a sense things are not all that bad these days. The sun shines, women are pretty, and life goes on. In another sense things, especially things political, have gotten so bad as to be downright comical. If laughter is the best medicine, we are in great shape. But the humor is dark and the joke is on us. Daily we are presented with situations to sober the mad hatter. A recent paradoxical example:

Last week government troops violently and lethally put down a political protest in Oregon. A small peaceful group had gathered at a vacant federal facility to denounce and expose government corruption. Things like that happen in a free society. Some protests are more welcome than others. This particular protest was doomed from its beginning. The protestors were mostly white men, Christians or pseudo-Christians and all carrying firearms. Their very nature exemplified the three cardinal sins of statism. Their actions amouted to herasy.

The media described these sinners as a “militia.” The priests in D.C. and the sycophantic chior declared them terrorists. As terrorists they were dealt with.

LaVoy Finicum, nominal leader of the “militia” was shot dead even as he tried to surrender. A video of the execution is available. Ammon Bundy and six members of his “clan” were arrested immediately thereafter. Will Grigg offers a sane account of the incident. According to witnesses, just like Han Solo, the government shot first. Kind of like, exactly like, Waco and Ruby Ridge. Lesson: the government suffers no critics; these kind of terrorists are not tolerated.

Meanwhile, during the same week, President Obama planned a visit to a Baltimore mosque. Obama’s father was a Muslim. His brother is a Muslim. He’s slipped up before and claimed to be a Muslim. Quacks like a duck and all. Normally a Muslim going to a mosque isn’t news. It’s to be expected. Except this particular Muslim supposedly takes a hard line against terrorism and this particular mosque is a hotbed of terrorism. Then again, all terrorists are not equal.

One B. Soetoro explained, concerning the upcoming visit: “By the mercy of Allah, the merciful, no mercy shall be shown the infidels. The [American people] shall convert or die. We will kill their men, rape their women, rape their children, and rape their goats. Allah Akbar!”

The Islamic Society of Baltimore is run by and a part of the Islamic Society of North America which is closely connected to known terrorism plots. Several of these plots have resulted in the deaths of American citizens.

“Terrorists” who oppose the Satanically corrupt government are killed or jailed. Terrorists who kill American people are graced by the President. Right is wrong and wrong is right. This madness was inconceivable in Starkville around 1980 but ordinary these days.

The cult of modern government is synonymous with terrorism. Support one and you aid the other. Both hate you. Remember this the next time some smarmy bastard weasal of a politician asks for your vote, all ye infidels and militiamen.

Guns, Goons, and the Law of Loons

This summer Texas college campuses will become safer places. A law is going into effect then allowing students, professors and others to carry firearms at schools without illegal government interference. Criminals are not happy. One B. Soetoro, expressed the concern of the element, “I’m trying to build a safe place … for Sharia. We can’t do that with the apostates heavily armed. This is terrible.”

Steven Weinberg isn’t happy either. The UT Austin physics professor has vowed to ban guns from his classes – acknowledging he will be breaking the law. Weinberg is confident he will be vindicated in court on the grounds that armed civilians somehow interfere with his freedom of speech. The man teaches physics, not law, so his confusion is partially explained. His education will likely be very costly both to him and the university.

Both may be held liable not just under Texas law but also federal civil rights law (42 U.S.C. 1983 perhaps) for violating the Second Amendment rights of his students. It’s amazing he thinks one of his freedoms trumps the freedoms of others. His acts, if committed, will constitute oppression rather than civil disobedience.

I understand and respect civil disobedience which is merely doing what is right in spite of technical prohibition. For example when I attended college in another century the law technically prohibited me from carrying weapons on campus. I disregarded this foolishness because the (concealed and unnoticed) expression of my rights did not infringe upon the rights of others. Weinberg on the other hand wants to use his position (color of law?) to quash the liberty of others.

Then again I doubt a limp-wristed liberal professor will have any success oppressing armed Texans. I’m not sure if this story is more alarming than hilarious. Sadly, though, it is not unique in modern American academia.

University of Missouri professor Melissa Click shares Weinberg’s liberal obsession with oppression but, obviously, not his respect for the First Amendment. A recent campus protest attracted the attention of a student reporter. Reporters report on things like that. People like Click don’t like the dissemination of information (very odd for a communications professor).

After verbally chastising the reporter Click laid hands on him in her zeal for savagery and silence of the press. She has been charged with assault. If she keeps her job maybe she can incorporate the incident into her class as an example of how not to communicate. “Use your words, class, not your hands.”

Back in Texas the state is laying hands on reporters too. Recently a team of investigation journalists made a documentary about the barbarous, vampiric, Satanic practices of Planned Parenthood. As a result a Texas grand jury was convened to investigate the multiple child murders and other crimes of “choice.”

Planned Parenthood already has the federal government, all branches, in its bloody pocket. It now has a Texas grand jury too. Not only did the jury exhonorate the killers but they indicted the reporters on arcane and incomprehensible felony charges. Of course the jury, supposedly independent, was under the thumb of the local district attorney. Of course the DA was a Republican. Republicans are allegedly pro-life. Lies and corruption abound.

This case highlights the complete failure of the American grand jury and “justice” systems. Any government that protects child killers and prosecutes those who decry the crimes is unfit. Any society that tolerates such madness does not deserve to exist.

More madness manifested in Oregon. There protestors took over a vacant federal facility to make a peaceful point about land rights issues. The government put down the protest with lethal force. “Liberals,” usually supportive of any protest, cheered. These protestors were armed white men. Professor Weinberg must have been elated by the news. “Law and order” “conservatives” cheered also as the police dealt harshly with technical criminals.

Around 1970 Eric Holder and his black panther friends staged the exact same kind of armed protest. He was rewarded by eventually becoming Attorney General. The leader in Oregon was rewarded with a bullet. Topsy turvy.

As AG Holder helped arm criminals and terrorists like drug lord El Chapo. Criminals stick up for one another. Maybe it’s time decent people who believe in freedom, civility, and protecting the innocent to do the same.
