Then They Came for Zero Hedge

The Twittards have banned Zero Hedge.

The libertarian financial website Zero Hedge was permanently suspended from Twitter on Friday after it published an article questioning the involvement of a Chinese scientist in the outbreak of the deadly novel coronavirus.

Bloomberg harasses ZH and their namesake gets to run for President. ZH asks questions about an international incident and they get cut off. (Of course, being kicked off Twitterland is its own reward).

Interesting time too, Mr. Dorsey. More recession signs flash.

The world’s largest bond market looks set for yet another bout of fear-induced trading next week, and this one could drive yields back to the panicky lows reached a few months ago.

The rising toll and rapid spread of the Wuhan coronavirus has strengthened demand for safe assets, sending Treasuries back to levels last seen when investors were fixated on recession risks. The yield curve re-inverted this week. The benchmark 10-year is close to slipping below 1.5% for the first time since early September, while the 30-year dipped below 2% on Friday.

It may not take a lot to rush through these levels, but a lot is certainly on the way. China’s stock market will open under duress as authorities struggle to contain the coronavirus. On the political front, attention turns from U.S. President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial to the Iowa caucuses and the popularity of the Democratic Party’s progressive wing. Hopes that a report will show a recovery at U.S. factories are looking dicey. And that’s just Monday.

That’s the kind of story that ZH would love to Tweet to the Tweeties. Twits.

First They Came for Julian Assange

I was going to say that anyone in the US who doesn’t protest what’s been done to Assange has no right whine about Greenwald, but then I remembered it’s the US; nobody cares. At least this journalist is Canadian.

Evidence of the bias against him was offered just this past Sunday, as Greenwald, who is facing serious cyber crime charges in his adopted country, Brazil, had an appearance on CNN’s Reliable Sources canceled at the last moment to allow the show to exclusively cover the ridiculously aggressive behavior of Mike Pompeo to an NPR reporter who had the audacity to ask him if he had supported former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch in his role as Secretary of State (he didn’t). This story was undoubtedly newsworthy, but some time on CNN’s equivalent to “Meet the Press” could have been devoted to the case of a Pulitzer prize winning American journalist facing imprisonment for doing his job.

As the reporter told the conservative Washington Examiner after his invitation to appear was rescinded, “I find it disappointing that CNN can’t devote 6 minutes to a major attack on a free press by the world’s fifth largest country that every major media outlet in the world has extensively covered, but being disappointed isn’t the same as being surprised.”

The case being built against Greenwald, by Brazil’s far right government and its demagogic leader, Jair Bolsonaro, deals with leaked documents, mostly comprised of hacked phone messages, provided by a still anonymous source that proved the country’s Justice Minister, Sergio Moro, who was supposedly an impartial judge at the time, worked behind the scenes with prosecutors to help them coordinate their media strategies as part of what was called ‘Operation Car Wash’, an anti-corruption investigation that most famously resulted in the jailing of the country’s former socially democratic president, Lula da Silva, who, along with his Worker’s Party, made significant strides in fighting poverty in the country beginning in 2003.

He’s facing the same kind of BS charges in Brazil that Assange faces in the US. Whatever comes of this, Derek Royden is correct: Greenwald “will be the last journalist to be targeted.” Our next feature showcases the clamping down on an independent financial publication. (Come to think of it, the grabblers aren’t too keen on a guy who writes a novel about their schools either).

2019 NEAP Reading “High” lights

Not too good.

The reading assessments at grades 4 and 8 were administered on tablet computers between January and March 2019. Representative samples of 150,600 fourth-graders from 8,300 schools and 143,100 eighth-graders from 6,950 schools participated.

Results are reported as average scores on a 0 to 500 scale and as percentages of students performing at or above the NAEP achievement levels: NAEP Basic, NAEP Proficient, and NAEP Advanced.

If I understand the data correctly, then the student corps are from a mixture of public and private schools. The private schools score slightly better than the public in almost all categories, reading included, mainly by pulling the two lower quintiles up a little higher. Considering just the public schools, the overall averages are a hair lower. As is, in toto, there was a small dropoff from 2017 to 2019 for grades 4 and 8. Precisely one state, MS, saw averages rise by any appreciable measure. Yay?

THIS GRAPH:

Screenshot 2020-02-01 at 3.06.07 PM

The five crooked blue lines are the quintile averages. They’re broken before 1998 to indicate that is when major “accommodations” began. The total period is from 1992 until 2019 – this is the era of major overhauls, fads, and money spending – the era when all the stops were pulled out. The result – virtually no change at all. And note, the top quintile has never averaged at the “advanced” level, which is a ridiculously low 270 of 500 (54%). 3/5ths of students fall below the vaunted “proficient” rating, which is a mere 240- of 500 (48%). What’s considered “basic” is only 210- of 500 (42%). 2/5ths are below that level. It looks like all the fads were able to do was temporarily cause a microscopic boost across all levels which now erodes. These stellar trends continue through the high school grades. All of this nothing for the low price of about $12,000 per student per year.

This is a partial explanation of why many or most high school students read at an elementary level – if that. Assuming that the average English speaker has an active vocabulary of 20,000 words and a passive (rarely used) vocabulary of maybe another 20,000, then most of these measured students (if this correlation holds) effectively have their vocabularies cut in half or worse. The lowest quintile has mastered perhaps something like 6-7,000 words in the active range, on par with most eight years olds. Add another 1,000 words or so for the 2nd quintile; another 1,000 or so for the 3rd quintile. Three quintiles below what’s considered the fluency threshold for learning any language (10,000 words).

This does not bode well. Look for more of the same results in 2020, 2021, 2025, 2033, etc. until the bottom falls out. Perhaps the ghost of Rudolf Flesch could write up Johnny Ain’t Gonna Read. Maybe, just maybe all the fads and the money were not as promised. Maybe go old school again?

All Manner of Unrighteousness

Fox can find time for trannies and degenerates, but not for those just happy to be alive.

“If you look at Super Bowls of recent past, important social conversations have been taking place in commercials — issues of immigration, the #MeToo movement, commercials by Coca-Cola talking about transgenderism,” Yates said. “The Super Bowl is a national stage used to talk about important issues. We believe that this an important conversation that needs to take place.”

Fox separately ruffled Christian conservative feathers by reportedly approving a commercial for Sabra hummus that will include two drag queen stars named Kim Chi and Miz Cracker.

The short advertisement marks the first time that drag queens will be featured in a Super Bowl advertisement, according to The Washington Post. The ad features the two drag stars in a dressing room. Kim Chi is shown eating Sabra while Miz Cracker jokingly tries to fit a football helmet over a large wig.

“So there you have it. Fox has said ‘yes’ to drag queens and ‘no’ to abortion survivors,” Evangelical leader James Dobson, the founder of Focus on the Family, said in a statement. “Celebrating sexual fantasy while denying the value of every life… could the soul of America be any more lost?”

In a word, “no.” The Super Bowl and the NFL used to be about competition and sportsmanship. Fox has always been about ratings and money. This now is merely a freak show by and for the mutually debased.

“And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice.” Romans 1:28-29

Enjoy the show.

TikTok too. They say they’ve recanted (because caught?). Your kids can tell you what that garbage is, after the big lame.

A massive (27,300 words!) Unz-esque article which sheds light on the murder of General Soleimani, 9/11, and more. Tuck your “TL;DR” away, this is worth it. Pay attention. And, watch Dr. Alan Sabrosky’s interview with the Iranian journalist; listen to his radio interview. 100% certain.

The January 2nd American assassination of Gen. Qassem Soleimani of Iran was an event of enormous moment.

Gen. Soleimani had been the highest-ranking military figure in his nation of 80 million, and with a storied career of 30 years, one of the most universally popular and highly regarded. Most analysts ranked him second in influence only to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s elderly Supreme Leader, and there were widespread reports that he was being urged to run for the presidency in the 2021 elections.

The circumstances of his peacetime death were also quite remarkable. His vehicle was incinerated by the missile of an American Reaper drone near Iraq’s Baghdad international airport just after he had arrived there on a regular commercial flight for peace negotiations originally suggested by the American government.

…

Read on…

Whatever the truth of a matter is, it is almost always the opposite of what is officially pronounced by the government and the media or what is taught as history. Y’all been lied to. Repeatedly.

In the days in and around 9/11, I was very close to many of the neocons and was perilously close to joining them. There was a smell about it all. Of sulfur.

If Americans ever know…

A new poll finds that a majority of the world’s people are tired of the tyranny of democracy.

The world is unhappier with democracy than ever, new research has claimed.

In a report published Wednesday, researchers from Cambridge University analyzed the political sentiment of more than 4 million people, using data from survey projects that covered 154 countries between 1995 and 2020.

The proportion of people who said they were dissatisfied with democracy over the last year hit 57.5%, according to the report, with researchers saying 2019 marked “the highest level of democratic discontent” on record.

Authors noted that over the last 25 years, the number of individuals dissatisfied with democratic politics around the world rose from a third to more than half.

Democracy is self-abuse, the collective belief in the wisdom of selfish and stupid individuals. And, my money says the selfishness part is what’s largely behind the polling: people want the free stuff faster than their votes can provide it. This is all good and bad. Ever seeking a better tyrant, the people will open themselves to whatever Greta, Bloomberg, or anyone else says or promises. The sheep want better grass.

Just not at Bethel U. (MN) where they’re getting rid of them.

A new initiative to reduce or eliminate textbook costs has quickly taken off in Bethel’s College of Adult & Professional Studies, improving educational accessibility and affordability for hundreds of students. Initially a collaboration between the Bethel University Library and the Office of Academic Affairs, the Zero Cost Course Resources Initiative aligns with a national trend in higher education to help make courses more affordable.

Funded by a two-year Strategic Growth Award grant from the Bethel University Foundation, the initiative replaces traditional textbooks with Open Educational Resources (OER) and eResources from the Bethel University Library. Faculty and staff launched a pilot run with the Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degrees in summer 2018, and the B.A. in Human Services, B.A. in Psychology, Bethel Distinctives courses, and the graduate-level International Baccalaureate Certificate in Teaching and Learning have since followed suit. All are set to offer entirely free course resources by spring 2020, saving students approximately $1,300 per year in textbook costs.

A cost-saving measure! And, why not? At Bethel, the annual tuition is $37,000 – all for a solid “F” rating, much like Harvard, on the 2019 ACTA index.

Screenshot 2020-01-29 at 3.09.29 PM

Remember college textbooks? They were expensive, even way back when. $100 new, to be resold after the course was over for $10-15. I get the money angle. There is a better way to teach most subjects, using original sources and the Great Book program that a few of the A-schools still use. I doubt that’s going to be the case at Bethel.

OER? Sounds like more U of BS.

People use to value privacy. Now they pay to get rid of it. Ring clandestinely sells out users to Farcebook.

Amazon’s Ring smart doorbell surveillance product has been caught sending user data to Facebook and other companies without making Ring users aware their data was being shared. That’s according to an investigation from the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF). What’s even more alarming is Ring users are having their data sent to Facebook even if they themselves don’t have Facebook accounts.

The EFF examined Ring’s latest Android app and found that it had four unlisted trackers sending Ring user data back to four websites including branch.io, mixpanel.com, appsflyer.com, and facebook.com. This is despite Ring’s privacy policy, which purports to list all the trackers being used in its software. That privacy policy was last updated over a year and a half ago and doesn’t list three of the four new trackers discovered.

And, why would anyone do business with the big tech companies that… Oh, yeah. Monopolies and all. Maybe low tech (or no tech) is the way of the sane future. Otherwise, is it One Ring to report them all?

Mass Attendance, mass surveillance, what’s the difference? And, these days, what is the point of attending most Amerikan universities? The University of Missouri mandates spying on its student inmates.

New students at the University of Missouri will be required to participate in a tracking program designed to measure and enforce class attendance, according to a new report from The Kansas City Star.

Despite privacy concerns, officials defended the decision as one to the benefit of students, as the school’s athletics department has already been using the same app, SpotterEdu, to track certain student-athletes.

“From labs to auditoriums our technology can expand to cover any size of space accurately and precisely” Tweet This
“A student will have to participate in this recording of attendance,” Jim Spain, vice provost for undergraduate studies at MU, said in a statement to The Kansas City Star.

Individual professors have to opt-in to using the app, but once they do, students in those professors’ classes will not be able to opt-out.

SpotterEDU, developed by a former basketball coach, is designed to monitor a user’s attendance by “pinpoint[ing] students within a classroom until they leave, providing continuous, reliable and non-invasive attendance,” according to the app’s website. While the app ensures that students are in the classroom during class times, it claims it does not track students’ locations anywhere else.

“We only care if students are in class during class; no GPS tracking means we can’t locate them anywhere else,” the app’s website states.

However, the app is not incapable of tracking students’ locations outside the classroom.

They even use Newspeak! We can’t track them elsewhere, only in class. Well, it’s not incapable of outside tracking. BTW, SEC school graduates, that means it is capable of tracking them outside. And, it will. This isn’t ripe for abuse. It is abuse. By the same Mizzou (Columbia) that rates a solid “D” on ACTA’s 2019 What Will They Learn index. (St. Louis also = “D,” Kansas City = “F”). So, what will they learn? Not much, outside of the joys of being herded like cattle, lied too and fleeced. “F” that.

UPDATE: Maybe someone at State reads FP.

UPDATE: More people agree that movements need to be constrained. Already seeing a 50% increase in reported cases since my FP article went live yesterday. Still small, but worth monitoring.
